once again, based on a song sung by josh groban, but this time, produced by rhys fulber. it's from cirque du soleil
“I can’t go back!” Elphaba told her blonde friend. “It’s time to face the music, however bad the tune. It’s time to-“ She looked at the flying broom in her hand. “-defy gravity. I’m leaving whether you come with me or not, Glinda.”
“I can’t go!” Cried the Gillikinese. Tears welled in her eyes. “I’m not nearly as strong as you, and this is completely ridiculified!”
Elphaba looked Glinda straight in the eyes. “Fine.” She said softly. “I understand. Goodbye, Glinda.”
In a swift movement she mounted the broom and zoomed through the window, ignoring the desperate cries of her friend.
Let me fall,
Let me fly.
There’s a moment
When fear and dream must collide
A week later, she was part of a rebellion against the Wizard of Oz. She was an Activist, a Radical, an Extremist, a… Wicked Witch? No… She hadn’t gone that far. And she wouldn’t, she promised herself.
Someone I am is waiting for courage.
The one I want, the one I will become will catch me…
Still, what her ex-roommate had said sometimes got to her.
“Elphaba! This is crazy. Do you really think that you can overthrow the Wizard alone? These… delusions of grandeur are getting seriously out of hand. I know I can’t make you, but I want you to come back to Shiz.”
So let me fall if I must fall
I won’t heed your warnings,
I won’t hear them.
And then Fiyero. Oh, Oz, Fiyero.
Let me fall,
If I fall,
All these feelings may or may not rise
The feelings did rise though. And that made things to much harder. She couldn’t put him in danger also. It wouldn’t be fair to him.
I will dance so freely,
Holding onto no one.
You can hold me only
If you, too, will fall
Away from all these useless fears
And change…
And he did fall with her. He chose to and he held fast, sure that life would be better for both of them. But no… The Gale Force found him and he was gone. There was no point in living, the cause was lost, their home wrecked… Even her broom was taken when the Wizard’s men raided her home, and she wasn’t there to do anything about it.
A month later, she stood on top of the highest turret at Kiamo Ko. She stepped back from the edge and gazed momentarily at the setting sun. She took a deep breath and broke into a run, throwing herself over the edge. She allowed herself to fall. The cold air rushed past her, singing… eerie and inspiring. She closed her eyes calmly, her hair flying wildly behind her, waiting.
Oh, Someone I am
Is waiting for courage.
The one I want,
The one I will become will catch me
So let me fall if I must fall,
I won’t heed your warnings,
I won’t hear them…
Suddenly, she realized that she’d slowly stopped falling. Her feet weren’t touching the ground, but she sat still, hanging in the air. There was no freezing wind racing past her anymore, but something warm… She opened her eyes and gasped. Was she dead? She was floating, with broad shoulders supporting her from behind. She looked back. Fiyero was behind her and they were on her old broom, she realized. I must be dead…she thought. Fiyero planted a warm kiss on her cheek and wrapped an arm around her.
“Never do that again.” He said, his voice a bit unsteady. He urged the broom forward.
“We’re leaving Oz.” Fiyero told her, still steering.
Let me fall,
If I fall.
There’s no reason
To miss this one chance,
This perfect moment…
“You learned to fly.” Elphaba said, finally.
“No.” He said. “I learned to fall.”
Just let me fall…
